What's so special about this chainstitch embroidery?
The Bonnaz-style embroidery machine was patented in 1869, and has changed very little since. These machines were workhorses in the garment industry for almost a century before slowly being replaced with zig-zag machines that can be used for free-motion embroidery, and later digital embroidery machines. They were especially popular for use in Western and work-wear, and for making the patches and lettering seen on varsity jackets. Think Nudi suits! Unlike a digital machine, the direction of a Bonnaz-style chainstitch embroidery machine is controlled entirely by hand - it's like drawing with an embroidery machine. It takes skill and attention to detail honed by a lot of practice to operate one, plus they're heckin' old, which automatically makes them cool!
What kind of stuff can you embroider on?
While some kinds of fabric lend themselves better to being stitched on than others, I'm able to add designs to most types of fabric. Denim, canvas, and other heavyweight fabrics are the best for stitching large designs on, while lighter weight fabrics may only be able to support smaller pieces or outlines. We'll work together to determine the best way to apply your design to your desired garment! Some items of clothing - I'm looking at you pants - are a little trickier than others and may require that the garment be disassembled and re-assembled - but don't worry, I got you!
Can I give you my artwork to chainstitch?
Sure, why not. There may be some tweaking required to make your piece suitable for stitching, but I'm happy to work with artists to figure out the details and make it work.
What if I don't have my own artwork?
Good news: you don't need to be artistically talented to help create a custom embroidery piece. If you have a concept, I'm all ears and we'll work together to bring it to the finish line. Even if you don't have a specific idea to work with, I probably have a thousand things rattling around in my brain that I'd love to stitch - help get them out of my head and onto fabric!
Do I have to provide my own clothing/fabric?
If you have an idea but don't have the perfect piece of clothing, I'm happy to help you find a garment that will work - either from the vintage clothes I have on hand, or elsewhere. If you're ordering a banner, pennant, patch, or other non-clothing related item, it's already covered.
How much does a custom piece cost?
The cost of a custom order depends on the size and intricacy of the piece, and what it's being stitched on. Pieces start around $20 for simple monograms and $50 for imagery.
How long will it take to receive my custom piece?
Custom pieces generally take between two and six weeks to be completed and shipped.
Can you make custom pieces in bulk or offer wholesale pricing?
Yes and yes. If you're interested in getting a large number of the same design made, contact me at [email protected] for more information on pricing and timelines.
Do you want to collaborate with me on something rad?
Almost definitely. Shoot me a line at [email protected].
Are you available for events?
Abso-freakin-lutely. Let's make some event magic!
Do you do any other kinds of embroidery?
In addition to the cool old Bonnaz machines, I have a digital 10 head embroidery machine that's great at doing things like making the same design en mass. I also offer artwork digitization.
